TRANSITIONAL MOMENTS IN THE LEGACY OF BRIGGS’ HISTORY TO STAY ALIVE TO CELEBRATE
50TH anniversary
In 1975 Briggs was founded by Mr. and Mrs. Briggs. Her words, “love of children and
teaching’.
This love of children is embedded in the choice of St. Nicholas, as the school’s Patron saint. History records Bishop Nicholas as the patron Saint of children, having saved 3 young girls from being sold into slavery by dropping three GOLD COINS down the chimney of their home one night. He rode around in his red suit on his horse giving the children in the village gifts. Looks like these precious good deeds till exist today on December 25th.
File notes-
1975 Briggs began with 15 kids and rose to 220 kids
1994 Death of Mr. Briggs numbers fell to 180 kids
1995 Retirement of Mrs. Briggs due to health conditions and growing debt
1996 100,00 debt and growing
Notes refer to this documented information as -THE END OF AN ERA!
As her health started to reveal a slow end, she did not give up with FCB wanting to forclose, really meaning closure of Briggs’. An Association of Briggs parents made attempts to keep the great institution alive but that required the purchase of the property. That approach fell through!!
Esmee did not fear even as death faced her, as her medical condition moved from stage
to stage. She made her personal call and convinced with spiritual clarity and humanity whom she wanted to take over and save BRIGGS. That call was made to Sarah Jackson-Wallace.
1996 Mrs. Jackson-Wallace and Dr Brian Wallace secured a new mortgage with FINCOR (Republic Bank) and life was sustained. New ownership of the Briggs Preparatory School. However, with numbers having dropped to 76, then to 63, there were escaping rumours, of Briggs closing. The already inherited debt, the declining numbers, and the ability to meet FINCOR ‘s monthly mortgage payments were just impossible. Another injection was needed to keep the doors open.
1998 Esmee Briggs died but with the doors of Briggs still open. She trusted her Legacy and love for children. Her sentiments Every child deserves an education, regardless of creed, colour race or ability.
What had to be done to keep her dream alive? The school was moved to Cascade, new owner’s personal property, where change of use had to be applied for and personal mortgage loans had to be applied for to reconstruct the property. A Regular Republic Mortgage and all moved incredibly well until COVID. Another challenging moment not only from the school’s side but parents’ loss of income, reductions all around, yet holding on to the objective of the legacy and the nation’s children. Briggs survived on continuous overdraft facilities, personal assets liquidation, donations from DC Shell Theatre (Crazy Catholic), the Fingal, Blake, and Wilesse William families, used as further injections. Then came the SME from Government via FCB through Republic Bank. That assistance which was meant to heal/help has now struck a blow, resembling a slap.
2024 December 24th at 4:45 pm a call came in from Republic Bank, to check the
school’s email. Republic gave us a Grinch letter requesting mortgage, SME and overdraft facility be subject to Demand Repayments. Official documents were delivered via TTpost special delivery. on January 9th, 2025.
How do we jump this hurdle, when we are not a church board school, nor do we
receive a grant from government? Meetings with the staff and their support, together with a dedicated Fund-Raising Committee, and very special parents have kept the school alive to this day. Let us try a GoFundMe to reach out to the thousands of students out there to support this financial need, three GOLD COINS WILL keep the soul of Briggs’ legacy alive.
